Greetings. So much has happened since I last posted. I have to admit, this blog is a compilation of several attempts to create a post for July. Here we are in early August, and we are suffering through the tropical storm Debby. I say suffering since I am currently at home, and not in the office, without electricity and writing by the light of my new, handy dandy, battery-operated table lamp. Go Amazon, lol! While we are not seeing patients today, we will make a decision about Wednesday and Thursday once we have more weather updates. Please be on the lookout for announcements on social media!
I can’t believe school has already started for some and will be starting for others in the next couple of weeks. My daughter will actually be starting her new adventure later this month as she has decided to transfer from the University of Florida to James Madison University in Virginia. Bye-bye Gators and hello Dukes!
The highlights of the summer include what I hope was a fun-filled July 4th for all. Emma Navarro, a local Charlestonian, wowed us with an incredible performance at Wimbledon, and again at the Olympics. The Olympics have delivered some amazing sports performances, for sure. Sadly, I haven’t been able to watch much of the Olympics, but I did learn that one of the USA bronze medalists in swimming was Katie Berkoff. When I was growing up, my brother and I swam competitively. My swimming career was less than prolific, and hence the reason I focused more on golf in my later high school years. We trained at a program called Germantown Academy Aquatics. Since there were several future Olympians in the program, I knew I was just taking up space in the pool, but I loved the sport. One of those fellow swimmers was David Berkoff, Katie's dad, who also won the same event as Katie (the 100 m backstroke) back in the day. Like father like daughter! Pretty amazing stuff!
Speaking of golf, Scottie Scheffler’s performance to win the gold in golf, shooting a final round score of 62, was unbelievable. Despite his number #1 world ranking even before the Olympics, his tearful appearance on the podium was a heartwarming display of patriotism. His stellar year is not so bad for a guy who landed himself in jail before the PGA Championship and who has been called, “the weirdest person I know,” by his wife.” Sophie’s tennis coach, Martin, always tells her that if you’re trying to achieve something extraordinary, you can’t do ordinary things. I guess he’s onto something, lol!
Apart from the sporting world, however, the news has been less positive. Shannon Doherty, an actress of “Beverly Hills 90210” fame, lost her battle with breast cancer. Her journey is a stark reminder of how devastating breast cancer can be and how it still affects so many women we know. In the crazy world we are currently living in, I feel as though there is less attention to breast cancer, so I can’t emphasize enough the need for yearly mammograms, with ultrasounds and MRI screenings as needed!
I won’t even delve into the craziness of our political landscape right now, but the Microsoft crash a few weeks ago was scary as well. Increasingly, we are hearing about these crashes or cyber-attacks, which are so disruptive. Two Fridays ago, the impacts were extensive, with preeminent healthcare systems like Mass General having to cancel surgeries. I actually had a flight that Friday, and I have attached a picture of my boarding pass to give everyone a chuckle! Given the TSA requirements and the fact that we live in a tech age, it’s hard to believe I could board a plane with this handwritten pass!
I want to end this blog with an announcement for an exciting event. We know that many of you travel over the summer or are busy with children and grandchildren. But with the resumption of school and a return to schedules, we thought that September would be a great time to show our appreciation for our patients. We have partnered with Charleston Magazine to sponsor what we are calling “A Luxe Night at the Gibbes” on the 25th of September. We have 40 invites to share and are keeping an RSVP list at the office, so call ASAP to reserve your spot! We will have swag bags with goodies as well as giveaways! But more importantly, it promises to be a wonderful event in a spectacular venue, and we are hosting it with Charleston Opera Theater and Harvest Catering! The event is our way of showing our appreciation for our patients, but it is my way to celebrate Kelly and the rest of my staff and to highlight our nonsurgical treatments. Kelly has been with me a little over two years, and since that time, we have been able to expand our nonsurgical offerings, and with her help, have been able to substantially grow the Medispa and Wellness Services. Here’s to more great times ahead!
And in the spirit of schooldays, we’re also going to be better about creating more educational posts on social media for you to convey some fun, fast facts…here’s a teaser…do you know the differences between Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify, and Jeuveau? Don’t worry, this isn’t a quiz, but be on the lookout for the answer!
And can’t leave without a theme song for the blog! Here's the video!
'Til next time,
Heidi Williams
